The occurrence of seizures due to pre-eclampsia is called eclampsia. When this occurs, it is called pre-eclampsia. The elevated blood pressure can cause damage to the vital systems such as the kidney, brain and liver. Some women who develop this have a hypertension even before they become pregnant. It is confirmed by clinical readings and usually returns to normal within six weeks following the birth of the baby. A high blood pressure reading is one above 140/90 mmHg. It is also called gestational hypertension which occurs in the 20th week of pregnancy and beyond. However, sometimes the blood pressure can either be elevated or low during pregnancy. The blood pressure needs to remain within normal limits so that the necessary oxygen and nutrients reach the fetus. One such change that is noticed is in the blood pressure. During pregnancy, a number of different physiological changes take place to ensure that both the mother and the growing fetus are healthy.
